Tanzania
Tanzania captures the very essence of the African continent. It
has the largest lake in Africa (and the second and the third for
that matter), the highest peak on the continent, the deepest lake,
the largest game reserve, the highest proportion of land set aside
for conservation and the highest percentage of the continent’s
wildlife. Tanzania is where the discerning visitor can track the
wildebeest migration through the Serengeti, climb Kilimanjaro,
dive the Indian Ocean reefs and stalk elephant through the vast
wilderness of Selous, all in two weeks. You may also want to include
historical sightseeing in Zanzibar Stone Town, remote trekking
with Masai warriors in Ngorongoro Highlands, tracking the chimps
at Gombe Stream or visit any of the 120 tribes that embellish
everyday life in this beautiful country. Tanzania has some of
the best wildlife areas in Africa - no less than 25% of this vast
country is dedicated to the conservation of wildlife - and names
like Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara bring forth
images of savannah abounding with wildlife. Over the past decade,
Tanzania has been in the shadow of Kenya as far as tourism is
concerned. However, the situation is rapidly changing and a growing
number of visitors to Africa choose Tanzania - often in conjunction
with a safari in Kenya. Both the roads and lodges are steadily
improving, and today the best lodges are comparable with what
you find in any other African country.
